Mole removal can be performed surgically (excision with sutures) or via shave excision (raised moles) or laser ablation (small flat moles). Surgical excision provides a complete tissue specimen for pathology — important when there's any concern about melanoma — and produces the most predictable cosmetic outcome with linear scarring. Shave excision removes raised moles flush with the skin but leaves a small flat round scar and may not get the full mole depth. Laser is suitable only for small, flat, clearly benign moles in patients seeking pure cosmetic removal.
Any mole with concerning features (asymmetry, irregular borders, color variation, large size, recent change) MUST be excised surgically with pathology. The other techniques destroy the tissue and prevent definitive diagnosis. Cost varies dramatically by technique — laser is least expensive but least diagnostic; surgical excision is most expensive but provides full pathology assessment.
