Chemical peels apply a controlled acid solution to the skin to remove damaged outer layers and stimulate collagen synthesis. Depth categories are superficial (AHA/BHA — glycolic, salicylic), medium (TCA — trichloroacetic acid), and deep (phenol). Superficial peels treat uneven tone, mild acne, and dullness with no downtime. Medium peels address deeper pigmentation, acne scarring, and fine lines with 5–7 days of peeling. Deep peels produce dramatic resurfacing with 1–2 weeks' recovery.
The skin is thoroughly cleansed before the peel solution is applied with a brush or gauze. Superficial peels cause a mild tingling or stinging sensation that resolves quickly; medium peels cause more pronounced stinging and are often neutralised after a set time. Expect skin to appear bronzed, then peel in sheets for 3–10 days depending on depth. Sun avoidance and strict SPF use are mandatory during healing. A series of 3–6 superficial peels spaced 2–4 weeks apart is the standard starting protocol.
Ask the clinic: Which peel depth and acid type are you recommending for my concern and skin type? How many sessions are in the protocol? What pre-peel prep (retinoid priming, hydroquinone) is needed? What is the downtime and what does the peeling stage look like? What sunscreen and aftercare products do you recommend?
