DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is an evolution of FUE hair transplant that uses a specialized Choi pen-style implanter to extract and place grafts in a single instrument. Unlike traditional FUE — where recipient channels are pre-made before grafts are placed — DHI implants each graft in one motion, providing more precise control over angle, depth, and direction.
Advantages include: higher graft density (more grafts per cm²), more precise direction matching to existing hair, no need to shave the recipient area in some cases, and reduced graft handling time (which improves survival). Disadvantages include: typically smaller maximum session size (~3,000 grafts vs FUE's 4,500+), higher cost per graft, and longer procedure time per graft. DHI is particularly popular for hairline restoration where precision matters most, and for patients seeking dense coverage in smaller areas.
