Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) affects 4-5% of the population and can be socially debilitating. Botulinum toxin blocks the nerve signals that activate sweat glands, dramatically reducing sweating in the treated area for 4-9 months per session. The treatment is FDA-approved for axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis but is widely used off-label for palmar (palm), plantar (foot), and forehead sweating.
Treatment uses 50-100 units per axilla — significantly more than cosmetic facial botox. Each underarm requires 15-20 small injections. The procedure is moderately uncomfortable but relief is dramatic: most patients see ~75-90% reduction in sweating within 1-2 weeks.
