Scar revision encompasses multiple approaches to improve scars that are wide, raised, depressed, hyperpigmented, or otherwise cosmetically problematic. Surgical excision repositions the scar in a more favorable orientation or breaks up linear scars with z-plasty/w-plasty geometric closures. Laser resurfacing softens raised or pigmented scars. Steroid injections flatten keloid or hypertrophic scars. Silicone sheeting and pressure garments prevent and improve early scars.
Treatment selection depends on scar type, age, and patient skin type. New scars (under 1 year) often improve dramatically with non-surgical interventions; older scars typically need surgical revision. Best candidates have realistic expectations — scar revision improves but never erases scars. Treatment timing matters: it's generally best to wait 12-18 months after the original injury for the scar to fully mature before surgical revision.
