Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) injectable that works fundamentally differently from hyaluronic acid fillers. Rather than directly adding volume, PLLA microparticles are injected into the deep dermis where they trigger a controlled inflammatory response that stimulates the patient's own collagen production. Volume builds gradually over 3-4 months as the body deposits new collagen around the PLLA particles, which themselves are slowly absorbed.
The technology is FDA-approved for nasolabial folds and HIV-related facial fat loss, with widespread off-label use for general facial volume restoration, temple hollowing, and even body areas like buttocks (Sculptra Butt Lift / non-surgical BBL). Treatment requires a series of sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, with full results visible at 4-6 months. Once achieved, results typically last 2-3+ years — significantly longer than hyaluronic acid fillers' 6-18 months.
