Surgical reduction of enlarged or stretched areolas. Often performed alone or combined with breast lift/reduction/augmentation. Quick outpatient procedure.
Areola reduction surgery decreases the diameter of enlarged or stretched areolas (the pigmented circular area surrounding the nipple). Common indications include: areolas enlarged from pregnancy or weight changes, congenitally large areolas, or asymmetry between left and right. The procedure is performed alone or combined with breast lift, reduction, or augmentation when overall breast reshaping is desired.
The technique uses a circumferential (donut) excision around the areola, with a smaller circular incision drawn within and the intervening skin removed. The remaining tissue is closed in a circular pattern. Sensation usually preserves well since the underlying nerve supply is preserved by the technique. Recovery is brief — most patients return to work within a few days; the breast tissue heals in 4-6 weeks before strenuous exercise. The scar is hidden at the areola edge and typically fades to a pale line over 12-18 months.
Patients with enlarged or asymmetric areolas — often post-pregnancy or post-weight loss — wanting more proportionate breast appearance.
