Laser hair removal uses laser energy specifically attracted to melanin in the hair follicle. Heat damages the follicle's growth structure, leading to permanent reduction in hair density over a series of treatments. Different lasers serve different skin types: alexandrite (755nm) for lighter skin and finer hair, diode (810nm) for medium skin, Nd:YAG (1064nm) for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick V-VI) where alternative wavelengths risk burns.
Most patients require 6-10 sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart for optimal hair reduction. Hair must be in active growth phase (anagen) to respond, which is why multiple spaced sessions are needed — at any moment, only a portion of hair is in anagen. Light hair (blonde, red, gray, white) does not respond well because there's insufficient melanin to absorb laser energy. Modern devices with appropriate cooling are well-tolerated; numbing cream is optional.
Anyone with dark hair on lighter or darker skin (with appropriate device) seeking long-term hair reduction. Light-haired patients are not good candidates.
