CO2 Laser Resurfacing

CO2 laser resurfacing uses a 10,600nm wavelength laser to vaporize the topmost layers of skin in precise patterns, then triggers dramatic collagen remodeling during healing. Modern fractional CO2 (treating only fractional columns of skin rather than the full surface) has reduced — but not eliminated — the recovery time compared to full-resurfacing techniques. It remains the most powerful non-surgical resurfacing available.

Indications include severe acne scars, deep wrinkles, sun damage, precancerous lesions, and overall skin aging. Recovery involves 7-14 days of significant redness, swelling, and crusting before the new skin emerges. Strict sun avoidance is required for 3-6 months. The investment in downtime is significant but the results — particularly for severe concerns — are unmatched by gentler treatments. Best results in lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I-III); darker skin requires careful provider selection due to hyperpigmentation risk.
