Cryolipolysis (commercially known as CoolSculpting) reduces localized fat by exposing adipose tissue to controlled cooling. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than surrounding tissues — they undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death) at temperatures that don't damage skin, nerves, or muscle. The body then clears the dead fat cells through normal lymphatic and metabolic pathways over 2–4 months.

Each treatment session targets one or more "pinchable" fat pockets — common areas include the flanks ("love handles"), lower abdomen, inner/outer thighs, upper arms, submental area (double chin), and bra rolls. A vacuum applicator pulls the tissue into a cooling chamber for 35–60 minutes per area. Most patients see a 20–25% fat reduction per treatment in the targeted area; multiple sessions are often combined for 2–3× that result.

The procedure does NOT shrink existing fat cells (as diet and exercise do) — it permanently removes a portion of them. This makes it durable as long as overall weight is maintained. It is not a weight-loss tool; ideal candidates are within 10–15kg of their target weight with discrete, treatment-resistant fat deposits.
