Calf augmentation increases the size and shape of the calf muscles using either solid silicone implants placed beneath the gastrocnemius muscle or autologous fat transfer (using fat harvested from elsewhere on the body). Implants deliver more dramatic enhancement and predictable shape; fat transfer is gentler but with less reliable retention rates.
Common indications include bodybuilders or athletes whose calf muscles haven't responded to training, patients with congenital muscle asymmetry, and those whose calves don't match their overall lower-body proportions. Recovery requires limited weight-bearing for 1-2 weeks and avoiding intense calf exercise for 6-8 weeks. Patient satisfaction is high in well-selected cases but post-operative pain is significant in the first 1-2 weeks.
