Septoplasty straightens a deviated nasal septum — the wall of cartilage and bone between the nostrils that, when displaced, can obstruct airflow, cause chronic congestion, and contribute to sinus issues. Unlike rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose reshaping), septoplasty is purely functional and is therefore typically covered by insurance when documented breathing difficulties are present.
The procedure works through small incisions inside the nostrils — no external scars. Surgeons remove or reposition deviated portions of the septum while preserving structural support. Most patients see significant breathing improvement immediately after splints are removed at 5-7 days. Septoplasty is frequently combined with cosmetic rhinoplasty (called "septorhinoplasty") so patients address both concerns in a single recovery — common after sports injuries that cause both breathing issues and visible deformity.
